Nowadays, me and sis would have to walk to IOI Mall for shelter because we have no transport to fetch us back and we're afraid to take the bus. Haha~
Anyway, we finished tuition and headed to IOI but that day, we used a different route. Usually, we would stop by Aunt's office to drop off our things and then only to IOI but that day Aunt was busy so we went straight to the mall. We finally approached the pedestrian bridge, which is just across the road, when I saw from the corner of my eye that a guy was tailing us. He approached us, trying to promote something or donations (which is pretty common here) and we pretended like we didn't see him. It's not like we were being mean or anything but sometimes you HAVE to ignore for your own good. You will know what I mean at the end of this post.
He kept talking and became so obvious that we can't ignore him any longer because he practically already placed himself in front of us at this point. We tried to cross the road but it was freaking lunch time so there were a lot of cars and we couldn't cross it. (I should had just pulled my sis with me and dashed across immediately) So I had no choice but to listen to him talk.
Me and sis : (Walking towards bridge and trying to cross the road)
Guy : (Tailing us while saying something in Mandarin obviously asking for a donation)
Me : No. Sorry... no.. no.. umm no.
Lot of cars. Guy stood in front of us.
Me : (internally rolling eyes and listen to him talk)
Guy : (Speaks a lot of Mandarin that I can't comprehend coz my Mandarin is not that good)
Me : (Smiles politely) No thanks.
He then proceed to take out a kind of form with columns for names, where you came from and how much you would like to donate.
Guy : Please help me to fill up this form, can you?
Me : Do I have to pay? Coz I have no money.
Guy : No no. You just have to write your name here.
Me : What is this for?
Guy : *Unknown Mandarin* .... We have a competition to see who can collect more money. RM10 will entitle me to 1 point and RM 20 will be 2 points and so on. *More unknown Mandarin*
I so hate myself for not fully understanding what he was saying. Note to self : Take mandarin classes to strengthen my Mandarin. By the way, I can converse in Mandarin pretty well for a national school student but this guy's was pretty hard.
Me : (Nodded and nodded and exchanged glances with sis) But I don't want to give you money coz I don't have it.
Guy : No, you don't have to. Just write down your name and the town you came from.
Me : (Proceed to write)
At this point here, a girl whom I presume is his friend came over and engaged Sis in a convo, obviously trying to separate us because we are giving the guy a hard time by not donating. Looks like a scam to me.
Guy : Are you in college or still in school?
Me : (Trying to keep the conversation as minimal as possible) Oh, I'm still in school.
Guy : Oh, I see. Are you doing part-time?
Me : No, I'm still in school.
Guy : Are you 15? 16?
Me : No, I'm 17.
Guy : (looked amused) I see, I see.
Me : (finished writing name and such) Here you go.
Guy : Why don't you write an amount in here? *Points to the donation column*
Me : (Voice slightly louder) Why? I don't want to donate. I said I don't have money.
Oh My Farking God. I am soooo annoyed because when he originally came on us, we already refused to donate. Don't you understand what is 'I don't want to donate. I don't have money'? We are on a tight budget and Mom only gave us RM30 to share among both of us. And guess what? The minimum donation fee is RM10 and a lot of people actually donated like RM20. One of them even donated RM70. Wah, that RM70 can last me a whole month loh! I am so f*ucked. I should really have dashed across.
Guy : No, no. Just write '20' there.
Me : And then I'll have to pay, right?
Guy : Just RM20 only. Then we can have 2 points.
Me : Just now we asked you, you said that we don't have to pay. We'll just have to write down the names.
The girl with my sister glared at the guy. Maybe they're not supposed to force people. OK, technically they shouldn't.
Guy : (helpless) Or you can just write '10'.
So if I gave 10 and my sis gave 10, that will leave us with only RM10 in our hands. WE NO NEED EAT IS IT? After that, me and Sis looked at each other and then the girl went away, leaving us alone with the guy. I guess she's pissed off.
Sis : Just now you said that no need to pay?
Me and sis : I already don't have enough money.
Guy : (Helpless) Erm, you two donate RM5 each lah. So total RM10. Can? And I will give you this keychain.
At this point, we're sure that he won't go away if we don't give it to him. So I took out RM10 and handed it over as a omg-pls-go-away money while feeling angry at myself for being such a wimp. This will be the last time, I vowed.
Guy : Thank you very much. This is for you. (Hands over purple bell keychain)
Me : (Takes it and quickly dashed across the road with Sis)
Phew. If you have a similar incident like ours, please don't be afraid to reject them. Stand up for yourself. I've learned my lesson.
Bye bye. Take care and have a nice weekend!
